The Toll System
The toll is the most visible — and sometimes most debated — part of the motorway experience. This article explains how it is structured in Morocco: the two main collection systems, vehicle categories and payment methods. We publish no precise rates, because these amounts change and must be verified officially.
Why a toll?
The toll funds the construction, operation and maintenance of the motorway. In the concession model that governs ADM, it is largely users who, through their payments, contribute to repaying the investment and sustaining service quality. In return, they get a fast, maintained, secured road with services.
Open and closed tolling
Two approaches coexist on the network:
- Closed tolling: you take a ticket (or tap your Jawaz tag) at entry, and pay at the exit. The amount depends on the distance actually travelled and the vehicle category. It is the most common system on long links.
- Open tolling: you pay a flat amount when passing a plaza, with no entry/exit ticket. It is found on certain sections or collection points.
In both cases, the principle is the same: keep your proof (ticket or Jawaz balance) and use the lane matching your payment method.
Vehicle categories
The rate depends on the vehicle category. The classification generally distinguishes four broad families:
- Class 1: motorcycles and side-cars;
- Class 2: cars and light vehicles;
- Class 3: vehicles with a trailer and certain vans;
- Class 4 and above: trucks and buses.
Payment methods
Depending on the plaza, several methods may be accepted:
- Jawaz electronic tolling (a rechargeable tag), the smoothest;
- cash, at manual lanes;
- bank card, where the plaza allows it.
Bank-card acceptance is not guaranteed everywhere: it is best to have a backup. For regular use, Jawaz remains the most convenient choice.
Understanding your charge
Under closed tolling, the amount reflects the distance between your entry and exit points, weighted by category. With Jawaz, the sum is deducted from the account balance; it is therefore essential to keep a sufficient balance to avoid unpleasant surprises at the plaza.
